Mickey Rooney was born Joseph Yule Jr on September 23, 1920, in Brooklyn, New York. His mother, Nellie W, was a former chorus girl. Rooney began performing on stage as a toddler and soon became known for his energetic and charismatic performances.

Rooney's breakthrough role came in the 1934 film "Little Lord Fauntleroy." He went on to star in several popular films throughout the 1930s and 1940s, including "National Velvet," "The Hardy Boys," and "Babes in Arms."
